Lent is a period of 40 days before Resurrection Sunday. This year, Lent starts on 22 Feb 2012 (Ash Wednesday). The early Christians evolved this practice to prepare themselves to commemorate the suffering, death and resurrection of Christ. It became an important time for self-examination, confession, repentance and renewal of commitment to the Lord Jesus Christ.
The pace of life gets faster and faster today. Unless planned for, we will not have time for reflection. For an event as deeply significant as Christ’s death and resurrection, it is a shame that we do not prepare our hearts as fully as the early Christians did. Cultivating the habit of Lent can help us to sanction a block of time for reflection about our lives and priorities. But above all, it directs our hearts steadily to meditate on the life of our Lord Jesus and his great act of love on the cross.
Trinity Life Centre will run two Lenten retreats this year, with the common theme “Watching Jesus.” Like the disciples, we will follow and watch everything that he said and did. For the first Lenten retreat (3 days 2 nights), we will look at Jesus’ words, actions and reactions during his journey to the cross. For the second Lenten retreat (4 days 3 nights), we will meditate on his suffering, death and resurrection.
